NPCI Interview Experience, 2017

Written Test :

Psychometric test for 90 mins

They will shortlist the students based on the grade you obtained from the test.

Interview Experience :

The interview was conducted at NPCI office, Hyderabad. The interviewers were cool and friendly.

  1. It started with self-introduction, mostly it covers the self interests and passion and slowly dig into technical stuff.
  2. Little discussion about basics of M.tech project such as, what is cryptography, encryption and what kind encryption is used in web browsers.
  3. After the project there was a discussion about programming languages, I preferred C, they asked me why C why not Java? I explained the benefits involved in C over Java in my project.
  4. Discussed various differences between C and Java. They asked few basic questions in JAVA, asked about garbage collector in JAVA and can we have similar functionality  in C?
  5. Then slowly digged into C basics, asked me the steps involved in running of C program, is it possible to compile & run a C program without main and then discussion about the pointers, double pointers and what kind of vulnerability is there with pointers such as dangling pointers.
  6. Usage of static variable in C with an example program.
  7. After programming languages  they asked few questions in data structures such as what is tree, binary tree, BST and then the difference between binary tree and BST. They asked about the  real time applications of trees.
  8. After data structures, they asked questions from computer-networks and dbms.
  9. From CN they asked about OSI layers , the difference between hub and switch, what are the layers in hub.
  10. From dbms they asked about the differences between MYSQL and Oracle
  11. Finally they asked me to choose between Developer and Testing Profile and we need to explain them why do we make that choice.
One thing i can say from my overall experience is it is combination of  HR and technical in a single hit and mostly it will be resume based interview and honesty matters.

Note: Only M.TECH CS & IT are allowed. Shortlisted only 8 people after written test. So, prepare well for written test.

Technical Interview:

2. Asked about final year project. What technologies are being used for implementing project. Different algorithms used. How did you compare different algorithms?
3. Draw and explain about different phases of SDLC(Software Development Life Cycle)?
4. Write logic to find the square root of a number and it should output whether the number is a perfect square or not (You shouldn't use any built-in functions like sqrt() etc..)
5. How do you maintain infrastructure of lab with 50 systems. What issues do you face and how do you overcome them?

TCS Labs

NOTE: Students were selected based on their resume.(they check your project and Area of Interest)

It was one telephonic round with Pune team and face to face round with Hyderabad team.

Hyderabad lab:
Explained about project.(can use board)
More discussion based on feature selection.
While discussing asked the mentioned algorithm's complexity.
For example. How to reduce knn complexity. What is k means clustering complexity etc
Questions connected to data structures and optimisations.
Normal interview preparation with programming questions will not work.
Good knowledge in algorithms, complexity reduction can help you out to solve the questions fired at you.

Pune team( telephonic ):
Tell me about yourself.
Explained project.
Discussion based on project went for a while.
All the details about project , how we will do, what you want to do, what kind of datasets etc
Asked about why you want to join RD?since I mentioned I am interested in PhD.
Then questions turned to discussion(chit chat) based on normal research, which publications/conferences you know, which faculities under which you prefer to do PhD, area of interest, about their organisation.etc
I asked about their projects, all the three members from the panel explained about their project in detail. Again for sometime discussions happened based on their project topic.
Their area was applied algorithms and recent work happening in data privacy.
Asked a small puzzle.
Again told me to explain Btech project.
I hope this is all about transparency during discussion. And our enthusiasm towards research field.
Panel was very friendly. And it was a very good discussion happened with me for more than one hour.
